Le genre Oenothera regroupe des plantes angiospermes dicotylédones appartenant à la sous classe des Rosidae, à l'ordre des Myrtales et à la famille des onagracées ou Œnothéracées (Onagraceae ou Oenotheraceae).
Le genre Oenothera comprend environ 80 espèces originaires d'Amérique.
Ce sont des plantes qui peuvent être annuelles, bisannuelles ou vivaces. Les tiges sont courtes à moyennes, parfois couchées à la base (décombantes), généralement dressées. Les feuilles entières, alternes sont souvent dentées ou pennées.
Les fleurs peuvent être en grappes ou en panicules ou solitaires. Suivant les espèces, certains s'ouvrent le soir, d'autres la journée. Le système floral est de type 4s x 4p x 4e c'est à dire que le calice est composé de 4 sépales, la corolle est composée de 4 pétales et l'androcée présente 4 étamines. L'ovaire, à 4 loges est infère.
